Thank you for your interest in becoming a certified court interpreter—this is a rewarding and impactful career, and I’m glad you are exploring it.
While each state has its own certification office and specific procedures, the general steps are quite similar across the U.S. Here’s an overview to help you get started:
Steps:

Attend a Two-Day Orientation Workshop
This is the first required step and is offered by your state’s certification office. -
Prepare for the Written Exam
After the orientation, you’ll take the written exam. I offer free guidance and preparation support for this stage. -
Pass the Written Exam
Once you pass, you’ll move on to the oral exam. -
Prepare for the Oral Exam
I don’t provide direct training for the oral exam, but I can refer you to colleagues who offer schools and practice materials to help you succeed. -
Complete Observation Hours
You’ll need to observe 20 hours of legal proceedings—either in person or remotely. Remote observation is available through my website. -
Register with Your State’s Court System
Once all requirements are met, you’ll apply for certification through your state’s office. All applicable fees are paid directly to that office.
